Charities have called for the Government to ensure people cannot be evicted from their homes during the lockdown. Generation Rent said the eviction ban introduced in March ahead of the first lockdown last year should be reinstated to protect renters during the restrictions. The six-month ban, which expired in September, meant that landlords could not start legal proceedings to evict tenants.

The Act extended the residential eviction ban put in place under the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Agency Order titled Temporary Halt in Residential Evictions to Prevent the Further Spread of COVID-19 (Order). The Order went into effect on September 4, 2020. The Act extends the Order's residential eviction ban until January 31, 2021.
